Frozen Rum Runner
A Florida Keys-style frozen rum runner with two rums, banana and blackberry liqueurs, juice and grenadine.
- 5 min prep
- 2 drinks
- Hurricane or tall plastic cup
The rum runner was invented to use up a bar's surplus of banana and blackberry liqueur, and it accidentally became one of the great beach drinks. It's fruity, deep red-orange and stronger than it tastes.
Frozen, the liqueurs give it a jammy richness. Serve it in plastic cups by the water, which is how it's meant to be enjoyed.
Frozen Rum Runner
Ingredients (2 drinks)
- 2 oz light rum
- 1 oz dark rum
- 1 oz banana liqueur
- 1 oz blackberry liqueur or brandy
- 2 oz pineapple juice
- 2 oz orange juice
- ½ oz grenadine
- ½ oz fresh lime juice
- 3 cups ice cubes
Instructions
- Add everything except the dark rum to the blender.
- Blend on high with the ice for 40 seconds.
- Pour into two glasses.
- Float ½ oz of dark rum on each drink and garnish with an orange slice and cherry.
Garnish: Orange wheel and cherry
Glass: Hurricane or tall plastic cup
Tips for the best texture
- Floating the dark rum on top gives the first sip extra character.
- This one is potent; serve smaller pours for a crowd.
Try a twist
Add half a frozen banana for a thicker, creamier rum runner.
Blender, frozen drink maker or slush machine?
These amounts are written for a standard countertop blender. In an ice-shaving frozen drink maker, put the ice in the hopper and the liquids and any fruit in the jar, then run a full cycle. In a home slush machine, which freezes the drink itself, leave out the ice, replace it with about 1 cup of cold water or juice, and pour the mixed liquid into the bowl.
